Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of strings do you recommend?

A: We recommend Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze strings at either .12 or .13 gauge for steel strings. For Nylon string models we recommend D’addario Pro Arte and Alliance Savarez Red strings.

Q: There is a bulge in the top of my guitar behind the bridge, is this normal?

A: Due to the design of the Lowden bridge and bracing pattern, a slight bulge behind the bridge is to be expected and is nothing to worry about. However, in overly humid conditions the top can swell beyond acceptable limits. A good indicator of humidity is the action height of the guitar. If the action drops to below 1.8mm on the Bass E string, it is likely that the guitar is too dry, if the action is above 2.8mm (again on the Bass E) the guitar may be too humid.
Q: How do I clean my Lowden?

A: We recommend that you clean your Lowden Guitar using a clean cloth, made damp with very slightly soapy water. In general, we do not recommend using polishes however, if you would like to use one, please ensure that it is matte finish, non-silicone polish.
Q: What are the conditions of my Lowden Warranty?

A: Your Lowden Guitar comes with a limited warranty exclusive to the first owner that covers potential faults in manufacture and also the first setup of the guitar after purchase. Subsequent setups are not covered. Pickup systems, accidental damage and general wear and tear are also not covered by the warranty.  See the full terms and conditions here
Q: What do I do if my guitar is too dry/humid?

A: The setup of your Lowden guitar can be adjusted to compensate for low or high humidity. If your guitar is too dry or too humid, we recommend that you take the guitar to an Authorised Lowden Luthier who can then adjust the neck angle or saddle height to lower or raise the action. Please note that in order to adjust the saddles to raise the action height, new saddles will have to be made. Please do not place shims underneath the saddles.

Q: What should I do to avoid humidity issues?

A: We recommend that you keep your Lowden Guitar inside its case when not being played. We would also recommend keeping a Planet Waves Humidipak inside the case to regulate the humidity.
Q: Where is the truss rod on my Lowden?

A: The truss rod can be accessed from the sound hole and is located behind the large transverse strut of the A-Frame, underneath the top where the fingerboard meets the top.
